Lord, How could this happen? By: Joshua Weed

It is September 11, 2005, four years after the dreadful event. The day when the prized possessions of  New York were destroyed. The day when all of America cried out “Why Lord?” On that day rescue teams flew through the city saving all of those they could. On that day all of our society rushed to the aid of those in need. On that day churches, corporations, and individuals came together and cried out to God for those in need. On that day America changed. It became a stronger more unified nation. The terrorists who plotted to put America in chaos were struck in awe, as the most powerful nation saw what had happened and made the best out of it. Since then America has become stronger and more powerful as a nation and as a community. People have become more open to each other and experienced the true meaning of community. Although the people were never given a direct answer to their question of why a disaster could happen, they created the answer themselves. Even though many had lost their lives, our nation as a whole grew stronger than ever before. The passion to become a strong, unified community was thrown into motion. Why then, now, four years later, could our nation be hit by another disaster? What did we do wrong Lord to deserve this hurricane? Why, after we had grown stronger and more unified, were we again tested by so many lives lost? The answer that immediately began to spring into people’s minds was that someone was to be blamed for this. Who did such a terrible thing that the whole nation should be punished? Should it be God? Should it be the government? Did we question who was to be blamed for the disaster on that terrible day four years ago? Sure we did, but did we let that stop us from caring for the others around us, did we let that stop us from unifying as a country? The reason our nation grew so much after September 11, 2001 is that we put aside the question of who was to be blamed, and instead we asked the question, “How can we help the people in need?” We asked, “Lord, please help us in this time.” The way to become a stronger nation is not to blame someone for this disaster, and then argue about it. The answer is to help keep those that have lost everything, to help those whose entire city has been swept to sea. During this critical time, when our nation is struggling, we need to make the decision. Are we going to just argue about who is to be blamed for the destruction, or are we going to go out, buy clothes and food, and find the best possible way to help the lives of those who have suffered? The option we choose during this time will decide our future as a nation. Our last disaster we had the same choice, and we chose the right answer, let us act now and make sure that our nation makes the right answer again.
